WHAT WOULD THEY SAY?
Living jazz means sensing the mythology that inhabits the history of this music. As we write, play, or prepare ourselves,we feel the strength of the great figures from whom we have learned.
I’ve always asked myself: what would they say? What would they say about how we live this music today, about how we interpret the language they left us?That question leads me to think of those who are no longer here, yet remain present in our musical world. We speak to them, and through them we speak.
THE MUSICIANS
The quartet that brings this music to life brings together four distinctive voices from Barcelona’s jazz scene. Bassist Martín Leiton, the leader of the project, is a musician with a broad sonic vision: a composer and improviser with a deep and flexible sound, he has developed a career that ranges from jazz to Latin American folk traditions, flamenco and pop, collaborating with artists from very diverse musical worlds while consolidating a personal voice on the contemporary double bass.
Alongside him, saxophonist Santi de la Rubia contributes an intense and expressive musical language, rooted in the tenor saxophone tradition yet deeply connected to the modern jazz language cultivated in Barcelona. His direct sound and strong narrative sense have made him one of the most solid improvisers in the Spanish jazz scene today.
Pianist Toni Saigi, a musician of great harmonic sensitivity and lyricism, is a very active figure both as a bandleader and as a frequent collaborator in different projects within the jazz world, where he stands out for his balance between tradition and sonic exploration.
Completing the quartet is drummer Andreu Pitarch, whose rhythmic approach combines precision, energy and a strong sense of collective listening. His way of supporting and interacting with the group brings dynamism and depth to the ensemble, and he is a regular presence in numerous projects within the Catalan and European jazz scenes.
Together, these four musicians represent a generation that has played an important role in shaping the evolution of jazz in Barcelona over the past thirty years.
