My latest project was So Tender: an album of jazz standards performed as solo pieces on the bass guitar. The motto of the project was “to interpret these pieces as if they were my own compositions.” Naturally, it was inevitable for me to return to a repertoire where all of them actually were. Each piece’s origin can be explained through text or images.
The piece Reinici (Restart) is associated with this reflection: “Reinici is a turning point; it’s the moment to close certain chapters and make space for new ones. Some things haven’t quite worked out, and I have to accept that, rethink them, and decide if I want to try again —perhaps with a different approach. Others have worked quite well, but their time is coming to an end, and they deserve to be concluded with as much elegance as possible. And finally, there is the vital need to start something new, whatever it may be.”
My compositions are born from my everyday work with the bass guitar, and they require melodists with a strong expressive capacity, performers with a broad palette of colors to paint and distinguish each texture, and improvisers with great quality and coherence —able to contextualize their interventions within the meaning of each composition.
These unique collaborators are Santi de la Rubia (tenor sax) and Oriol Roca (drums). This combination of elements gives "Reinici" its purpose.
