“Edward” is the fourth album by my trio, Luismi Segurado Trio, for this very special label, Fresh Sound Records. Over time, many great musicians and friends have passed through the trio, and for this occasion, thanks to my dear friend Jordi Pujol Baulenas, I have the honor of featuring two truly exceptional musicians, without a doubt two of my absolute favorites: Jorge Rossy and Masa Kamaguchi. With these two magnificent individuals, it was certain that the result would be something wonderful. It is truly beautiful to see how music that you have composed with so much love and dedication takes its final form in the shape of an album. For that, I am deeply grateful.
As always when composing, I draw upon some of my favorite musicians for reference, inspiration, and as a point of departure—usually those I’ve been listening to the most in recent months, or those who have always wandered around my “musical mind.”
This time, the guiding lights were Duke Ellington, followed by George Gershwin, along with a few others. I won’t go too much into detail, as there’s little left to say about the greatness of these two composers and pianists—eternal sources of inspiration. They were, let’s say, “timeless” musicians, creating music that you always want to listen to again and again. Remarkably, they were born within about six months of each other (Gershwin being the elder), bringing the 19th century to a triumphant close.
Thus, I started writing down ideas that gradually came together as a kind of “suite” in homage to them both. At the time, I had been listening often to two of Ellington’s suites (“The Degas Suite” and “The River”) as well as Gershwin’s “An American in Paris” and “Rhapsody in Blue” (both of which, truthfully, have accompanied me throughout my life).
