The Young Moderns
The Young Moderns showcases the remarkable talent of pianist, arranger and composer Dave Hildinger (1928–2020), whose sophisticated writing bridges the worlds of jazz tradition and modern musical innovation. Featuring his dynamic quintet and inventive arrangements, this 1956 recording captures the spirit of the emerging generation of jazz artists of the 1950s —formally trained, adventurous in sound and rhythm, yet deeply rooted in improvisation. A vibrant portrait of Dave Hildinger’s unique musical voice.
The Exhibit
Originally released in 1958, The Exhibit presents the distinctive compositions and arrangements of Swedish-born saxophonist and composer Sture Swenson, co-led with drummer Jack Noren. Bringing together some of Chicago’s most creative Young jazz talents, the album blends sophisticated writing, adventurous ensemble textures—including the unusual use of four guitars—and inspired solo work. Swenson’s melancholic baritone enhances the haunting beauty of “Dear Old Stockholm”, while the ambitious “Tamerlane Suite” reveals his imagination as a composer. A striking example of the modern jazz spirit flourishing on both sides of the Atlantic.
