Jazz Studio 4
Recorded in May and June 1955 for Decca Records, Jazz Studio 4 was Jack Millman's first album as a leader and an ambitious showcase for his talents as composer and instrumentalist. All the compositions are his own, performed by a changing cast of some of the finest musicians on the West Coast jazz scene. The varied settings, from compact small groups to larger ensembles, were shaped by arrangements from such leading jazz writers as Shorty Rogers, Jack Montrose, Jimmy Giuffre, Johnny Mandel, Bill Holman and Pete Rugolo, creating a distinctive portrait of Millman's musical world.

Shades of Things to Come
For his second album, Shades of Things to Come, Millman turned to his “Big-Little Band,” a flexible sextet combining the intimacy of a small group with a broader orchestral palette. Recorded in September 1955 and originally produced by Harry Babasin for Nocturne Records, the album was subsequently issued by Liberty Records. Its program blends Millman originals with well-chosen standards, imaginatively arranged by members of the group as well as other West Coast jazz writers. The performances are warm and fresh, with an easy, cohesive swing.
