Johnny Hartman (1923–1983)—born in Houma, Louisiana, and raised on Chicago’s South Side—is best remembered for his velvety-rich baritone on the landmark John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman album of 1963. Before that, he had already served as a singing soldier during World War II, performing at U.S. Army camps with

drummer Louie Bellson. After his discharge in 1946, he returned to Chicago, won a talent contest at the El Grotto Supper Club, and soon began recording his first singles for Sunbeam Records before joining Earl “Fatha” Hines. The Chicago Defender hailed him as a “singing sensation” and “Chicago’s newest bronze Sinatra.”

By 1949,Hartman’s reputation grew through touring and recording with the Dizzy Gillespie Big Band. In the early 1950s, he moved ahead as a soloist, recording substantial bodies of work with Mercury, Apollo, and finally RCA Victor. Along the way, he also laid down some of his finest material for smaller labels including Sunrise, Regent, MGM, Jubilee, and Herald—all originally conceived as singles during the classic era of 78 and 45 rpm records.

Although Regent originally issued only four of Hartman’s recordings as singles, all the titles from those sessions were in fact conceived for release on 78 rpm discs. The complete set remained unissued until 1957, when Savoy (Regent’s new parent company) gathered them for the LP Johnny Hartman Sings...Just You, Just Me.

Across this 3-CD collection, all of Hartman’s singles are presented—together with every recording originally intended for single release, plus live performances and other rarities from the same era. This comprehensive anthology, Johnny Hartman: The Last Balladeer –The Complete Singles, Rarities and Live Recordings, reveals a goldmine of early performances, capturing Hartman at his most expressive during the formative years that would culminate in his celebrated collaboration with John Coltrane.
