"Their roots are in France and Tunisia, but nowadays all three live in Brussels. And we are fortunate for that. The recent debut of the Baz Trio has turned out to be a very charming record.
The title of "L'Homme Bleu" is said to refer to the Touaregs who, in their blue robes, enjoy enormous freedom in the immense, peaceful and ever-changing environment that is the Sahara Desert. Still, pianist Wajdi Riahi's studies of Arabic music do not resonate too explicitly. With a few exceptions (such as the great interpretation of 'Lamma Bada Yatathanna') the music is more closely situated in the corner of Brad Mehldau.
Furthermore, a title like 'Rehearsal Song' suggests that spontaneity is important for this trio. The combination of their attentive interplay with the excellent, modern compositions ensures that this solid debut never gets boring. From the modest 'One for Flint' to the playful 'Claudio,' we can safely speak of a modest revelation."
