Andrew Rathbun

Originally from Toronto, Canada, Andrew Rathbun lays claim to a professional music career that's been varied and diverse; a career highlighted by performances, recordings, and airplay throughout North America.
Fortunate enough to study with Pat LaBarbera in Toronto, Andrew developed his style, tone and a flair for composition early in his career. 1990 saw Andrew lead a group to a second place finish at the CBC - ALCAN Jazz Competition. In 1991 he was awarded a Canada Council for the Arts Grant to study in Boston with Jerry Bergonzi and Bill Pierce. He took up residence there in 1992 and received his Masters with Academic Honors and Distinction in Performance from the New England Conservatory, where he studied with George Garzone, Jimmy Guiffre, and George Russell.
Throughout the years, Andrew has been featured on radio and television, has performed at festivals and clubs throughout North America (including the Montreal, Toronto and Boston Globe Jazz Festivals) and toured Canada with his own quintet. His pieces have been performed by the N.E.C. Big Band and the Prometheus Woodwind Quintet and he was recently runner-up in the IAJE - Dizzy Gillespie Commission Competition. Recently, Andrew led a big band which included Kenny Wheeler, performing Wheeler's extended compositions for jazz orchestra.
He was a fellow at the Aspen Music Festival, an artist at the Banff Center for the Arts, a woodwind studio instructor on faculty at the University of Maine and is currently continuing his teaching at the Amadeus Conservatory in Westchester County, NY.
Andrew has played and recorded with notables such as Eddie Gomez, Kenny Wheeler, George Garzone, Jay Anderson, John Abercrombie, Ingrid Jensen, Don Thompson and Reggie Workman. His last solo recording "True Stories" released on the Fresh Sound New Talent label, is a work for sextet that includes texts by Canadian author and poet, Margaret Atwood. His other current release, including "Jade" on the Fresh Sound New Talent series presents the best of his talents as player, leader and composer. "Jade" is a song cycle for octet based on the poetry of Cathy Song.
