Ain't What You Do
Dodo Greene (1924–2006), born in Buffalo, was a well-known nightclub singer before releasing her first album in 1960. She performed at venues like Mister Kelly’s, the Town Casino, and the Royal York Hotel, and had recently completed a successful European tour. Coming from a musical family, she worked as a secretary and nurse before being discovered by Cozy Cole. A singer’s singer, Dodo’s warmth, vigor, and exuberance—infused with humor and emotion—captivated audiences. Slide Hampton arranged and conducted the tracks of her debut album, Ain’t What You Do, featuring top jazz soloists and allowing her expressive voice and jazz-influenced phrasing to shine. Greene carefully selected her repertoire and connected deeply with listeners. Her professionalism earned admiration from Dinah Washington and Sarah Vaughan.
The Blues
Margie Anderson, a Boston-born vocalist with a heartfelt, powerful voice, recorded her only full-length album The Blues in 1959, backed by an orchestra of top local jazz musicians from the Herb Pomeroy Orchestra, arranged and conducted by Bob Freedman. A seasoned entertainer in East Coast clubs and black-cast variety shows throughout the 1950s, Margie brought rare depth, stage charm, and soul to every performance. This album captures her at her finest—interpreting blues and jazz standards with elegance, intimacy, and emotional power. A hidden gem from a golden era.
