A Time for Love has been one of those things that have grown organically from the depths of my heart without even trying. Its been like opening a tap and letting the water flow from the source of jazz, and doing so with partners like Deejay Foster and Jo Krause, to purify that water. And recording at Miquel Roger Casamadas studio Auditorium, to make that water crystal clear.
"The title and tracks of Roger Mas's album present the Spanish pianist as a devotional old Romantic. He hums away in the background on fairly straight treatments of 10 standards without suggesting any of the irony or bitter-sweetness they might embody, though he does catch the conditions subsumed under the heading of love but they're there in the tunes anyway.
Interesting to hear his faintly Oriental take on Billy Strayhorn's Passion Flower segue into Ellington's Melancholia, as the two seem to belong together. Mas has a gentle sense of humour evident here and there in his pianistic effects but expressed, at least nominally, in his F major version of C Jam Blues."
