Four musicians walk into a recording studio... no joke. Bandleader Joe Manis had brought to New York’s Samurai Hotel Recording Studio a wide variety of music to record. Despite the fact that he had never played with two of the three players, Manis knew that—in the best of the jazz tradition—all present were ready to interpret the music with understanding, creativity, and spontaneity. Manis is an Oregon-based player with a wealth of experience both as a leader and as a bright light in the bands of others. Although most often heard in the Pacific Northwest, he has toured overseas extensively in the groups of bassist David Friesen.
In three and a half hours of recording, Joe Manis, George Colligan, Vicente Archer, and Bill Stewart tackled a striking range of material: originals by Manis and Colligan; pop music by Brian Wilson, Paul McCartney, Jack Bruce, and Tom Waits; screen music by Neal Hefti and David Shire; and three freely improvised pieces. Set the time machine for the Samurai Hotel Recording Studio in Astoria, Queens—October 13th, 2024. Manis, Colligan, Archer, and Stewart are ready.
