PAL JOEY was the most noteworthy film musical of 1957 in terms of personality, appeal, and a wealth of good songs. With a redoubtable Frank Sinatra in the music lead, Pal Joey shouted from the top of Nob Hill the delicious ditties of songsmiths Richard Rodgers and Lorenz Hart. Aided by a saucy script adapted from John OHaras racy book, glamour queens Kim Novak and Rita Hayworth made the utmost of the color photography and elaborate trappings, not to speak of some very expert vocal dubbings by Trudy Ewen (for Kim) and Jo Anne Greer (for Rita).
Sinatras performance, and his magnificent renditions of The Lady Is A Tramp and I Could Write A Book won him a Golden Globe for best actor, and a Golden Laurel for top musical performance. PAL JOEYs soundtrack includes some of the brassiest, most beautiful musical numbers written in the Golden Age of Hollywood, and each song retains the distinctive freshness of the original Broadway show. All in all a witty, swinging musical score for a memorable comedy that remains fresh 50 years after its release.
