THE BIG JOKE presents itself as a selfcaricature of jazz aesthetics: a distorting mirror in which tradition and imagination are stretched to the point of becoming unrecognizable. Above all, it is a personal reinterpretation—at times exaggerated, at others deliberately fragmented—of what this language means in my mind today.
From an early age, jazz has been a territory of fascination and reverence for me. Yet that admiration has always coexisted with a persistent question: what can I contribute to a music whose history is shaped by cultural, social, and historical contexts so distant from my own? Rather than attempting to resolve that distance, this project embraces it.It inhabits it.
The album emerges precisely from that conflict: not as a definitive answer, but as an open gesture honest in its imperfection and fully aware of its own irony in the face of history’s weight. Here, jazz is not a fixed place, but an idea in constant motion.
In this way, THE BIG JOKE proposes a personal—at times extreme— definition of the word “jazz”: a space where the playful and the introspective, the energetic and the vulnerable, coexist. A serious joke, or perhaps a seriousness disguised as a joke.
