Originally issued on Norman Granz’s Verve and Clef labels, this CD comprises the complete master takes under the leadership of Count Basie, featuring some of the finest small group sessions ever recorded. These nine studio dates include first class soloist as Charlie Shavers, Joe Newman, Eddie “Lockjaw” Davis, Paul Quinichette, Lucky Thompson, Vic Dickenson, Oscar Peterson, and a special vocal tandem by Ella Fitzgerald and Joe Williams. There’s no doubt these were crucial years to the history of jazz in general, and Basie’s career in particular.
