Hadley Caliman

Hadley Caliman (January 12, 1932 in Idabel, Oklahoma – September 8, 2010) was an American bebop saxophone and flute player.

After studying at the Jefferson High School with trumpeter Art Farmer and fellow saxophonist Dexter Gordon, Caliman was briefly in the late 1960s a member of a jazz-rock fusion group led by Ray Draper. He recorded his first solo album in 1971 on the Mainstream label, followed by two dates issued by Catalyst in 1976 and 1977, reissued in the superb collection “The Catalyst Years”.

Also known for his rousing solos on Santana’s “Caravanserai” 1972 release. He has also contributed to other dates by Todd Cochran, Don Ellis, Hampton Hawes, Azar Lawrence, Julian Priester, Freddie Hubbard, Eddie Henderson, Joe Henderson, Earl Hines, Bobby Hutcherson, Jon Hendricks, Earl Anderza, Patrice Rushen, and other jazz notable and fusion acts from the era.
