Born in the small town of Cary, IL in 1980, Justin Christopher Purtill has been at various times in his life an actor, singer, dancer, busker, poet, farmer, dog walker, but also a fine guitar player, composer, drummer, acoustic and electric bassist.
Upon completing his degree in Professional Music with an emphasis in jazz bass from Berklee College of Music in 2003, and after performing with jazz greats like Gary Burton, Hal Crook, Eric Kloss, and young talent Leo Genovese, he quit playing bass and started writing songs on guitar.
This new direction led him all over Europe and Canada, and produced two albums under his name. He also obtained a Master’s Degree in Contemporary Improvisation from the New England Conservatory in 2007.
Then he moved to California to join Melvin Seals and his blues, funk rock band, JGB. During his year long tour with JGB he formed his own trio which is currently his working band. With them and the help of pianist Leo Genovese he cut this CD.
This new AYVA Music release is something different from other sets the label has previously issued. With a very personal sound influenced by the varied musical stages in Justin’s career, that is “Roots” music close to different styles such as Americana, blues or avant-garde jazz.
