Two complete albums on one CD, previously released on two separate LPs in Japan, both now out of print.
One of the finest singers in jazz history, Johnny Hartman's discography made up in quality for its lack of quantity. This, of course, adds extra importance to each and every Hartman recording - especially his recordings in a small band format, as is the case with these two outstanding Tokyo albums.
While there was an American CD reissue of these LPs in the 1990's, both albums on the release were incomplete, with each session missing two different songs. The vocalist is at his best on these dates with exquisite versions of "My Favorite Things", "Summertime", "Nature Boy", "On Green Dolphin Street", "My Funny Valentine", and also the previously unreleased recordings of "Greensleeves", "On A Clear Day", "Shadow Of Your Smile" and "Fly Me To The Moon" for the first time ever on CD.

"This compilation combines together three sessions recorded in Tokyo by the warm ballad singer Johnny Hartman. Although the two first sessions were released as "Sings Trane's Favorites," the vocal recital only has three songs associated with John Coltrane ("My Favorite Things," "Violets for Your Furs," and "Nature Boy") and the majority of the selections are actually taken from an unrelated session in which Hartman was matched with trumpeter Terumasa Hino. The music alternates between ballads ("Violets for Your Furs" and "The Nearness of You" are high points) and swingers and, although Hartman does not really improvise, his voice (still in its prime at the time) is appealing. Considering his slim discography, Johnny Hartman's fans will definitely want this one."
