The celebrated performances here, among the first that Wes Montgomery recorded, come from 1958 and 1959, but acclaim for the guitarist shouldnt diminish the impact of the other Montgomery Brothers - the skillful Buddy at the piano, and the steady, driving Monk on electric bass, not to mention the men on the other dates. Harold Land, whose robustly inventive tenor contrasts beautifully with the guitarists more gentle conception, is second only to him in solo honors. The other horn in this set is the spare, direct and eloquent alto sax of Pony Poindexter, a player steeped in the jazz tradition.

After Wes Montgomery died in 1968 at the age of 43, producer Dick Bock reissued some of the tracks from these sessionsin some cases edited within the framework of a brass or a string section to add colour to the proceedings. They were created and arranged by Gerald Wilson, who did his best to support Montgomery, whose guitar wends like a golden thread through the music.
