Vardan Ovsepian Discography

Vardan started playing piano at the age of five, and was soon accepted into the Junior Music School in Armenia where he studied for eight years. He went on to study at Melikyan College, majoring in Music Theory. In 1992, he entered Yerevan State Conservatory majoring in Classical Composition, and transferred to Estonian Music Academy where he studied Contemporary Composition.

Following his strong interest and passion for jazz and improvised music, he decided to expand his musical perspective at the Helsinki Jazz Conservatory in Finland. His dream was fulfilled when he was awarded a scholarship to Berklee College of Music in Boston, where he majored in Piano Performance. He graduated in May 2000, and at present he is teaching at the Musical School in Newburyport, MA.

These days Vardan is performing with Mick Goodrick, Frank Carlberg, Joshua Davis, Take` Toriyama, Chris van Voorst van Beest, Hal Crook, Bob Weiner, Tony Malaby and others. From early ages being very inspired by music of F. Chopin, F. List, and solo piano works of Keith Jarret, Vardan was taking every little opportunity to play solo recitals. After moving to Estonia in 1994 he started intensively performing solo. Later on, new musicians were on the scene for inspiration: Philip Glass (his repetitive ideas, which appear in the fragments of the “Abandoned Wheel”, and Brad Mehldau's “Elegiac Cycle”.

Intensive solo performances in the East Coast of the United States brought to new contacts. He met such musicians as Reed Anderson, Bill McCandry, Ben Waltzer, who were recording for the Fresh Sound New Talent label at that time. These musicians and, of course Frank Carlberg, who has known Vardan for quite a few years, recommended him to submit solo piano recordings to the “Fresh Sound”, knowing that the Label would be interested in such a non-standard solo piano music.
