The core of this project is shaped from the Atlantic recordings –released during Coltrane’s stylistic development period through his “sound layers”- and the Impulse recordings. Vicente Espí’s project focuses on Coltrane’s music legacy from respect but, at the same time, from a deep knowledge of his work. He develops in this album the musical ideas of Coltrane, yet he does not simply imitates his style, he adds new sound element of his own. The musical development of Espí is energetic, powerful, even brisk at times, clearly influenced by John Coltrane’s drummer (Elvin Jones), and build up a powerful magnetism. He has surrounded himself with musicians who have proven their worth in more than one occasion. They form one of the most ambitious and complex projects of today’s jazz scene. A greatly enjoyable project worth discovering.
