Review:

"This is a live album recorded at the Pour House jazz club in 1961. The musicians, Paul Moer on piano, Jimmy Bond on bass, and Maurice Miller on drums played there regularly on Friday and Saturday nights "for a few months", according to Moer's brief liner notes. I wish I could have been there, even though I was only 9 years old at the time. This album is terrific.

First, as a working trio, the three musicians are in sync with each other almost to the point of telepathy. This album is a wonderful example of how the best musicians always listen to, and play off of, each other. They sometimes swing hard, they sometimes swing gently, but they always, always, swing. The second reason to buy this album is for the tunes, most of which were written by Moer himself. The ballads are lovely and haunting, and one more uptempo tune, "Tall Polynesian", was also recorded by Paul Horn when Moer was working on Horn's band. My favorite, however, is the gentle swinger, "Mean Time", which is beautiful, exquisitely simple, and has as good an example of tension and release as any I've ever heard.

I don't know much about Paul Moer's history, or why he never came to New York. Though he was not a hard bopper, he had major chops and could have held his own in any jazz scene anywhere. I greatly regret that I discovered him so late, as he passed away not long ago. It's my understanding that he was still occasionally gigging around Los Angeles in the late 1990s. I'm so sorry I never heard him live. This recording lets me know I missed someone truly special."
