This release presents rare ever before heard Miles Davis performances taken from Paris broadcasts made in 1956 and 1957. On the majority of these recordings, Davis is backed by a quartet that consisted of Frenchmen Barney Wilen, René Urtreger and Pierre Michelot, plus American expatriate Kenny Clarke, while the long version of Lady Be Good pairs Miles with the great Lester Young.
Two additional unissued broadcasts by the Miles Davis Quintet with Sonny Rollins, taped at the Café Bohemia in 1957, have been added as a bonus.
After being in France in 1949 & 1956 for short periods of time, Miles returned to Paris in 1957 for a longer stay. By this time he was already a star. He had formed the first of his celebrated quintets in 1955, with Coltrane, Red Garland, Paul Chambers, and Philly Joe Jones. His performance at Newport that same year had been highly acclaimed, and led to a lucrative recording contract with Columbia. Early in 1957, Miles recorded the first of his great albums with Gil Evans, Miles Ahead, and Coltrane temporarily left the quintet in order to kick his drug addiction (replaced by Sonny Rollins).
