Notes:

"An album like this demands the really top men. I was fortunate [on Junes Got Rhythm] to be surrounded by musicians more than able to hold up their parts..."

June Christy

-June's Got Rhythm

"Many of singer June Christy's popular Capitol albums feature her cool-toned vocals backed by an orchestra. This recording is an exception. Christy excels on a jazz-oriented set with a nonet that includes trumpeter Ed Leddy, trombonist Frank Rosolino and her husband Bob Cooper (who arranged the set) on tenor and oboe. Christy accurately called this music "intimate swing." Her versions of such songs as "I'm Glad There Is You," "My One and Only Love," "When Lights Are Low" and "Blue Moon" are tasteful, sincere and often quite memorable."

Scott Yanow -All Music Guide

-Do-Re-Mi

"A fascinating interpretation of the little-known 1960 Broadway musical by Jule Styne, Betty Comden, and Adolph Green, "Do-Me-Ri" represents another creative detour for June Christy. Half of the record comprises an instrumental set led by her husband, tenorist Bob Cooper, and features West Coast giants Buddy Collette, Bud Shank, and Conte Candoli. The songs are lightweight but appealing, affording Christy the opportunity to cut loose and have some fun. Her trademark intelligence and sophistication nevertheless remain intact, stripping tunes like "I Know About Love" and "Make Someone Happy" of their over-the-top theatrics to focus squarely on their emotional underpinnings. Cooper's half is no less impressive, adding depth and panache to Styne's featherweight melodies."

-June Christy Recalls Those Kenton Days

"During a near-decade-long run, June Christy's soaring and bright vocals proved to be ideal for the Stan Kenton band's modern and idiosyncratic jazz charts. Thanks to Pete Rugolo and Bob Cooper's increasingly tailor-made arrangements, Christy soon became the star attraction of the group and eventually cashed in on her own with a string of fine solo LPs. Released after her classic Something Cool and The Misty Miss Christy albums, this ten-song solo collection is comprised of updated Christy-Kenton favorites like "Just A-Sittin' and A-Rockin," "Across the Alley from the Alamo," and "The Lonesome Road." Nearly matching his stellar work on many earlier Christy albums, Rugolo handles the charts and conducts a large group of Kenton veterans like Cooper, drummer Shelly Manne, and trombonists Milt Bernhardt and Frank Rosolino. Other jazz luminaries such as guitarist Jim Hall, bassist Red Callender, trumpeter Russ Freeman, and saxophonist Paul Horn round out the band. "June Christy Recalls Those Kenton Days" might not rate with "Something Cool" or "The Misty Miss Christy" as a first-disc choice, but it is still a must for serious June Christy fans."
