This sensational re-edition contains all of the studio recordings made for the Pacific jazz label by the original Chico Hamilton’s outstanding quintet featuring Buddy Collette on flute, clarinet and alto and tenor saxes, Jim Hall on guitar, Fred Katz on cello and Carson Smith on bass.
In addition, this release also contains, as bonus tracks, the quintet’s first live session, recorded at The Strollers club only a few weeks after the quintet’s formation, and a sensational drums solo performed by Hamilton during a concert at the Stockton High School with Gerry Mulligan’s Quartet featuring Jon Eardley on trumpet and Red Mitchell on bass.
The tunes from these sessions include some great standards such as “My Funny Valentine”, “I Want to be Happy”, “Stella by Starlight” . . . and two immortal originals “A Nice Day” by Buddy Collette, and “A Bark for Barksdale” by Gerry Mulligan.
