Complete Alhambra & Blackhawk Performances (2 Cd Set)
Ahmad Jamal Trio
Featuring: Ahmad Jamal (p), Israel Crosby (b), Vernell Fournier (d)
REFERENCE: JL759_2 BAR CODE: 8436019587591

Double CD set presenting all known 1961 performances by the celebrated Ahmad Jamal Trio with Israel Crosby and Vernell Fournier at Ahmad’s own club, the Alhambra in Chicago, and the Blackhawk in San Francisco - compiled for the first time on a single set.
The Alhambra performances were originally issued on two LPs: "Ahmad Jamal’s Alhambra", and "All of You". Most of the Blackhawk performances were originally issued on an LP titled "Ahmad Jamal at the Blackhawk". Two selections from that album: 'We Live in Two Different Worlds' and 'Night Mist Blues', appear here on CD for the first time ever, as well as 'On Green Dolphin Street', which only previously appeared on an old compilation LP. These would be the last recorded gigs by this formation, as bassist Israel Crosby died in mid-1962.

Notes:
"This historic double-disc set by the original Ahmad Jamal Trio captures their classic live performances as a group in their entirety on CD for the first time. Jamal owned the Alhambra Club in 1961 and of course, his own trio with bassist Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier was the house band. This is the group that so dazzled Miles Davis with its use of space and lyricism. The original Live at Alhambra Club date featured six performances, and there was a follow-up LP. Disc one of this beautifully recorded and mastered collection contains 13 tracks. Disc two contains the legendary Live at the Blackhawk performances (also from 1961) in full as well,-again, for the very first time on CD. There are 14 performances on disc two. Notable Jamal renditions of standards, such as "Sweet and Lovely," "Time on My Hands," "Angel Eyes," "Falling in Love with Love," and "On Green Dolphin Street" are all here, making this the definitive Jamal of the early '60s, and easily his finest live offering. Sound is warm, spacious, and full, and the entire proceeding is beautifully assembled."

-Ahmad Jamal's Alhambra
"Taken from what were probably bassist Israel Crosby's final recordings with pianist Ahmad Jamal (14 months before the bassist's unexpected death), this LP features the classic version of Jamal's Trio (with drummer Vernell Fournier) playing live at the leader's short-lived Chicago club. The interplay between the musicians was often magical, as can be heard on such numbers as "We Kiss In a Shadow," "Love for Sale," "Broadway" and "Isn't It Romantic."
-All Of You
"The second of two LPs documenting the Ahmad Jamal Trio's recordings at Jamal's Chicago club (the Alhambra) [...] With bassis Israel Crosby and drummer Vernell Fournier completing the group, Jamal's trio had a personal sound of its own, often playing quietly and leaving space but never losing the passion. These versions of "Time on My Hands," "Star Eyes" and "All of You" in particular are well worth hearing."
