A rare 1965 Bill Evans long out of print concert performance in Paris, featuring Chuck Israels & Larry Bunker, and recorded at Maison de lORTF, Paris. There are also 3 bonus tracks from a 1962 radio broadcast at Birdland, with Paul Motian replacing Larry Bunker. 1965 was a busy year in Bill Evans' career, beginning with a New York studio session on February 3, accompanied by Israels and Bunker. The session was issued as Trio 65. The trio then began a European tour where they were recorded in Paris on February 13. This is the concert included on the current release, which was taken from a radio broadcast.

The announcer on the bonus tracks is Sidney "Symphony Sid" Torin, whose voice and pet phrases are well-known by jazz fans. Torin presented many live broadcasts from Birdland, the Royal Roost, the Hi Hat and other venues, which were fortunately saved for posterity by the likes of Boris Rose and a few more aficionados, who were eagerly waiting at home with their recording machines, ready to capture the broadcasts' every note. That's probably how these three tunes were preserved.

Review:

"Pianist Bill Evans led quite an assortment of trios during the '60s and '70s. Derived from a radio broadcast of a performance at the Maison de l'ORTF in Paris on February 13, 1965, "The Bill Evans Trio Live in Paris" is a marvelous portrait of the group that featured bassist Chuck Israels and drummer Larry Bunker. Israels takes a particularly colorful solo during "Nardis" and Evans pours unusual amounts of energy and expressivity into Irving Berlin's "How Deep Is the Ocean?" The producers of this reissue added three fascinating bonus tracks which were also recorded off of a live radio transmission, this time emanating from Birdland in New York on February 10, 1962 with Paul Motian handling the drums and Symphony Sid Torin emceeing. This superb compact disc is filled to the brim with exquisitely well performed modern jazz of a predominately cool nature; it is very accessible and consistently inventive."
