Vardan Ovsepian

Armenian-born pianist Vardan Ovsepian comes to the recording scene with “Aragast”, (the Armenian word for sailboat), an interesting device that builds on the chamber-like quality established in his three previous Fresh Sounds albums — “Abandoned Wheel” FSNT108, “Sketch Book” FSNT142, and, in 2004, “Akunc” FSNT202—. One work which advances compositions that allow diverse interaction among the musicians of his band, featuring the fiery playing of guitarist Tim Miller, Joshua Davis on bass, and Mark Ferber on drums.
In his own words, the sail is a symbol for “the idea of movement, to suggest flowing in that kind of way; to sail in a boat to see where it takes us. I want to suggest motion, but with spontaneity, to work in the idea of travel.”
